LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Britney Spears is making headlines ahead of the release of her memoir ‘The Woman in Me' on October 24. The book contains insights into the singer’s life and conservatorship as is evident from the excerpts released so far.
In a recent interview, music legend Cher candidly spoke about her thoughts on the ‘Baby One More Time’ singer’s conservatorship under her father Jamie Lynne Spears. Her thoughts were, however, not welcomed by fans as they criticized her for not helping Britney at the right time.
Cher says ‘everybody on the Strip knew’
Calling out Jamie Spears, the 77-year-old singer recalled in the interview, “I don’t think it was right what her father did because it seemed to serve him, no matter the help she needed and needs.”
She added, “I hear things, but no matter what, you love your children and sometimes you have to step in," per OK! Magazine.
Cher also said that she did not like Britney’s father controlling her finances as she remarked, “I didn’t like it, so I wanted to let her know I was watching and I was listening."
She also recalled the time when both of them were having their Las Vegas residency and propagated the idea that everyone knew about the situation then.
The ‘Strong Enough’ songstress recounted, “When we were in Vegas, everybody on the Strip knew. We just didn’t know how deep it was, but we knew something was really not right.”
She further added that people then speculated the ‘Oops… I Did it Again!’ singer was under the influence of medications.
She said, “You could tell, everybody would say, ‘She’s medicated,’ but not enough to not be able to work, and when people talk, they multiply things, but I knew there was a certain basis, there was that grain of truth, but it bothered me.”
Britney recalled in her memoir of feeling ‘infantilized’
Britney recalled about the harrowing days of her conservatorship as she writes in her book, “I became a robot. But not just a robot — a sort of child-robot. I had been so infantilized that I was losing pieces of what made me feel like myself,” per PEOPLE.
She also describes how her identity was jeopardized, writing, “The conservatorship stripped me of my womanhood, made me into a child. I became more of an entity than a person onstage.”
Britney decried further, “I had always felt music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me.”
She further continued in her memoirs, “Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick.”
Britney Spears fans slam Cher
Britney fans were, however, not happy with the legendary singer as they flocked to the Internet to slam Cher.
One of the fans said, "Everybody will be jumping on the bandwagon to try to get some Britney clout for themselves. If you did not try to help her then, shut up now please."
"She’s ridiculous. How would you be okay with knowing someone was medicated to the point where they could perform for thousands but not be able to communicate with her peers," said another.
The third fan commented, "I knew they knew. Celine dion said something in an interview about Britney. Wasn’t loud enough. See something say something. Terrible to just walk on by. A lot of Hollywood knew, oh well it wasn’t them."
"I honestly can't believe that a legendary icon like Cher would say this.....," castigated another fan.
Another fan slammed, "Should’ve Could’ve Would’ve Empty words."
"Dumb. So if this is the case why didn’t she do anything about it," said someone else.
"Yet no one helped. Bye," summed up another fan.
