Sam Smith fans vent frustrations as singer cancels show after four songs
Sam Smith described feeling "heartbroken" after "vocal issues" caused them to stop their Manchester concert last night, just four songs into the set. The singer took to the stage at AO Arena on Wednesday (May 24) and earlier teased fans on social media that there would be a "special surprise" near the end of the gig - they earlier shared a brief clip to social media, hinting at a collaboration with Madonna. However, after performing their 2017 song 'Too Good at Goodbyes', the lights went out at the venue as the show suddenly stopped. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter At first confused fans at the show speculated there was a "power cut" after the lights went dark for approximately 20 minutes but were later informed the show was cancelled due to Smith having "vocal issues". But Smith posted a statement to Instagram to explain the reason their concert was abruptly cut short. "Dearest sailors, I don’t know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows. "Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end," they wrote. "During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong." They added: "I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry." Since then fans have expressed their disappointment on Twitter, believing Smith should have cancelled their Manchester show earlier. While some described the "anxiety" in the crowd as it was the sixth anniversary of the terror attack at Manchester Arena just days before on May 22. While others wished Smith well, hoping that their voice was okay. Earlier this year, Smith achieved their third UK number one album, with Gloria. Have your say in our news democracy. Jared Cannonier breaks UFC record in win over Marvin Vettori
Jared Cannonier broke a UFC record in his win over Marvin Vettori on Saturday, landing the most significant strikes ever recorded in a middleweight fight in the promotion. Cannonier was a unanimous-decision winner against Vettori at the UFC Apex institute in Las Vegas, beating the Italian with scorecards of 49-45, 49-45 and 48-46. And as much credit as the American received for his performance, Vettori was also praised by his colleagues for his resilience, which saw him absorb – and survive – more significant strikes in a single fight than any middleweight in UFC history. Cannonier landed 249 significant strikes against Vettori across five rounds, with the record previously standing at 186. Cannonier, 39, and Vettori, 29, are both former title challengers in the UFC, with both having been outpointed by incumbent champion Israel Adesanya during the Nigerian-New Zealander’s first title reign. Adesanya, who lost the belt to Alex Pereira last year but won it back from the Brazilian in April, is rumoured to be defending the gold in Australia in September, and Cannonier has said he would happily serve as the back-up fighter for such a bout. “Yeah, man, we get paid for those moments,” Cannonier told media after his win against Vettori. “I’m more than happy to step in for that opportunity and get paid even if I don’t fight. “You still get paid a little bit, so I’m happy with that, and I wouldn’t mind a trip to Sydney. I’ve never been to Australia before, I’ve always wanted to go.” At UFC 293 in Sydney, Adesanya is expected to fight the winner of July’s clash between Robert Whittaker and Dricus Du Plessis. Adesanya first won the UFC middleweight title with a TKO of Robert Whittaker in 2019, and he retained the belt against the former champion with a points win in their rematch last February. 'Arrogant' Shaquille O'Neal slammed for three word response to Martin Brundle on F1 grid
Martin Brundle might have the most thankless task in all of broadcasting which has been further exemplified by an interaction with basketball legend Shaquille 'Shaq' O'Neal. As is customary at every grand prix, the Sky Sports reporter attempts to speak to the biggest names and celebrities that are in attendance at that particular race. This weekend saw the Las Vegas grand prix take place which was won by Max Verstappen but it's often the celebrities that steal the show and this time it was Shaq's turn. Brundle had attempted to have a few friendly words with the NBA icon who was a guest of Red Bull on the grid. However, the 7ft 1in colossus was in no mood for talking and was more eager to pose for photos. Brundle stood his ground though and waited for Shaq to finish and as the 51-year-old strode past he managed to get a microphone in the former LA Lakers stars' face. However, Shaq response was a lot shorter than his size, only saying "Lewis Hamilton baby" in response to the reporter. Brundle sarcastically responded with: "Lewis Hamilton, baby. That’ll cover it,.” The veteran reporter added: “Yeah, it’s okay. I’ve had a great television career so, honestly, it doesn’t really matter, does it, if it’s over this evening?” Although Brundle is used to these type of awkward interactions with major stars it still didn't stop people from thinking that Shaq's behaviour was rude and ignorant. Brundle has also had awkward run ins on F1 grids with the likes of Machinegun Kelly, Cara Delevingne, Megan Thee Stallion and Brad Pitt. He has had some fun on the grid recently, such as when he met Eurovision legend Sam Ryder.
