Illicit free streams for Barbie, Oppenheimer and other summer blockbuster movies pose a risk to people attempting to watch them online, cyber security experts have warned. Searches for how to watch the films for free were tracked by security firm NordVPN, revealing links leading to sites containing malware and other malicious software. The worst impacted movie was Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3, according to the researchers, with links shared on Twitter containing the most number of phishing warnings, malicious links and malware concerns. The Super Mario Bros. Movie had the second-most security threats linked to it, followed by Barbie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, John Wick: Chapter 4, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Little Mermaid, Oppenheimer, Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Illegal online streams that allow people to watch films for free have become a popular way for cyber criminals to exploit web users in recent years. Several illicit platforms that mimic the functionality of Netflix and other legitimate streaming services offer ways to watch films and TV shows with little cyber security risk to users, however links shared on social media sites like Twitter and Reddit can often lead to fake websites that attempt to steal financial or other sensitive information. “Trying to watch films this way is like searching for a needle in a haystack, with few of the links providing a watchable movie,” said Adrianus Warmenhovem, a cyber security advisor at NordVPN. “Most of these blockbusters will soon be available on reputable streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, so we suggest film fans be patient and enjoy these movies safely. Always stay cautious when clicking on a link, even on a trustworthy website, and use anti-malware tools.” Major sporting events are particularly vulnerable to cyber attack attempts, with searches for free live streams surging in the build up to big fights, football matches and races. The most popular form of piracy is websites hosting free streams of films and TV, accounting for more than 80 per cent of all piracy, according to figures published earlier this year. Piracy research firm Muso revealed that illegal streaming of films grew 38.6 per cent between 2021 and 2022, while visits to free streaming sites rose by nearly 9 per cent. With the release of another Barbie movie trailer, fans are getting excited - and couldn't help but notice something they believe to be a heartfelt detail to the doll's origins. In the new preview, viewers got to see more of what Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie and Ken get up to when they end up in the real world, far from their home in Barbie Land. But there is a brief moment near the end of the trailer that has everyone talking. It features Barbie sitting on a park bench and sharing a smile with a mystery woman sat next to her. Ideas are forever.” Viewers who watched the trailer with subtitles noticed how the quote is attributed to a character named Ruth. So, many believe that the mystery woman is actually meant to represent the inventor of the iconic doll, Ruth Handler who passed away back in 2002. Handler created Barbie back in 1959 and with her husband Elliot Handler. She was the co-founder of Mattel toys which in turn Barbie became one of the most recognisable dolls ever. Fans quickly took to Twitter to share this presumption - although this has not been confirmed and some have noted Rhea Perlman is part of the cast but her role has not be revealed yet although some believe the voiceover did sound like her. Meanwhile, the lineup for the movie soundtrack was also announced with music from Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Charli XCX, and even Ken himself as Ryan Gosling being list. In addition Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have made a new version of AQUA's “Barbie Girl,” which can be briefly heard in the trailer. Disney's Pixar has revealed its first-ever non-binary character who features in the studio's latest film Elemental. Set in a city where water, fire, air and land residents live, the moving story is all about "a fiery young woman," called Ember and a "go-with-the-flow guy" called Wade who discover "something elemental: how much they actually have in common", according to the film synopsis. Wade's younger sibling, Lake Ripple is a non-binary character who uses they/them pronouns and is also voiced by non-binary voice actor Ava Hauser. Sharing the news on Twitter on Friday (June 16), Hauser posted: "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT I got to play Pixar's first non-binary character. Meet Lake! Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter "I voice Lake in the new movie #Elemental! I'm seeing it in theaters tonight with my friends, so you can catch it in theaters too if you wanna see them." People also shared some love for this news and for the character Lake. While others noted other Pixar characters in the past who have not exactly followed the gender binary, namely Francis from A Bug's Life. Elemental made around $30 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices over the weekend, with Reuters reporting that this is the second-lowest debut in Pixar's history.
