Sir Michael Parkinson, one of the country’s most celebrated broadcasters and talk show hosts, has died at the age of 88, his family told the BBC. A statement from his family said: “After a brief illness Sir Michael Parkinson passed away peacefully at home last night in the company of his family. “The family request that they are given privacy and time to grieve.” The television broadcaster has been remembered as the “king of the chat show” with a career spanning seven decades. He is perhaps best known for his eponymous talk show, Parkinson, during which he interviewed an estimated 2,000 famous guests, including the boxer Muhammad Ali, footballer George Best and comedian Sir Billy Connolly. Tributes from across the world of TV and beyond have poured in for the “titan of television”. BBC broadcaster Nick Robinson wrote on X: “He was the greatest interviewer of our age who owned Saturday night TV for year after year.” Comic Matt Lucas, said: “Sir Michael Parkinson was a titan of television, the ultimate chat show host. We’ll never forget his brilliant interviews with Muhammad Ali, Dame Edna, Billy Connolly and, of course, ‘that bloody emu’.” Dara Ó Briain praised the “consummate pro” that Parkinson was, writing: “I had the privilege of doing the Michael Parkinson show 3 times and it the most I ever felt like I was in ‘proper showbiz’. He was a consummate pro on-screen, and generous and encouraging off-screen.” Actor Eddie Izzard wrote: “Very sad to hear that Michael Parkinson has left us. He was the king of the intelligent interview.” The director-general of the BBC paid tribute to Sir Michael Parkinson as “the king of the chat show” and an “incredible broadcaster and journalist”. In a statement, Tim Davie said: “Michael was the king of the chat show and he defined the format for all the presenters and shows that followed. “He interviewed the biggest stars of the 20th century and did so in a way that enthralled the public. Gordon Ramsay knows a thing or two about the restaurant business, that much is pretty clear. He’s an authority on all things dining, with dozens of restaurants worldwide and seven Michelin stars, and according to him there’s one dish people should never order when it comes to eating out. That dish? The soup of the day. Speaking in a resurfaced interview with Town & Country, Ramsay said that restaurants can often reuse old produce and dress it up as a special. Giving people a word of advice, Ramsay said: "Ask what yesterday’s soup du jour was before today’s special. It may be the case that it’s the soup du month." So there you go – Ramsay knows best. In the same interview, he also said that he often asks waiters and waitresses for guidance when ordering at new restaurants. "It really depends on the restaurants, but servers tend to taste most of the dishes on the menu and can give you insight to what the chef has added or what locals love," he said. "Being on the road, I’ve gotten a lot of great recommendations from servers." It’s the first time that Ramsay’s been in the news since he was mercilessly mocked online after sharing the supposedly inspirational advice he received from his father-in-law. The celebrity chef was talking about getting the money together for his first flat with partner Tana back in the day, when he asked her father, Chris Hutcheson, for a loan. Tom Brady has become the latest US celebrity to buy a stake in a British football club, and we have to admit it’s one sports story we didn’t see coming. The NFL legend has announced he’s become a minority shareholder in Championship side Birmingham City. He’ll get involved in the operation of the club itself, too, with Brady becoming the chairman of the club's advisory board. The new role will see him work with the sports science department to give expertise on the health of the players and advise on recovery programmes. He’ll also work with the marketing team as part of his position. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Brady follows the likes of Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McInerney in buying a stake in a British club, as well as golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas who were recently confirmed as minority investors in Leeds United. It comes a few months after Brady confirmed his retirement from the NFL after an illustrious career spanning more than two decades with the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady said on Thursday (August 3): “Birmingham City is an iconic club with so much history and passion and to be part of the Blues is a real honour for me. BCFC is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our Second City club second to none. "I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.” Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner also said: “Tom Brady joining the Birmingham City team is a statement of intent. We are setting the bar at world-class. Tom is both investing and committing his time and extensive expertise. As Chair of the Advisory Board Tom will have a direct impact on the Club. "The Men’s, Women’s, and Academy teams are going to benefit from the knowledge. The goal that Tom has committed to own is to make Birmingham City a respected leader in nutrition, health, wellness, and recovery across the world of football.” The news was announced on Thursday morning and it’s already sparked a big reaction. Howard Stern has made it clear that he's no royalist after he called King Charles, a "p***y" and slammed the coronation as "disgusting." The American radio host discussed the recent coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla on his Monday show (May 8) where he referred to the royal couple as "vampires" and declared that "England’s got to get a grip on themselves." "I understand maybe it brings in tourism but Jesus H Christ," Stern began, before having some choice words for the newly crowned King Charles. And people are acting – the whole ceremony they’re acting like that f***ing guy went to war or something and then beat up all the other people." "They’re like ‘We swear our allegiance to you and you’re a great warrior,'" Stern added. "I mean the whole thing is f***ing nuts and in this day and age." He went on note the millions being spent on the coronation while the country is currently going through a cost of living crisis. "It was disgusting and I’ll tell you why it’s disgusting," Stern continued. "It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to say this but England’s having its own economic problems and they spent a fortune on that coronation. And it’s just repugnant to watch a country who’s suffering through economic problems and then you see the pomp and circumstance. Though Stern did concede that the royal family brings tourists to the UK. "I’m not naive. I understand that they’ve determined that having a monarchy brings tourists in and provides a flavor to the country and something for people to go see, it’s part of the tourism, I get all that, I’m not naive. But it just sends the wrong message." Meanwhile, Stern wasn't impressed with King Charles and Queen Camilla's pre-recorded cameo on 'American Idol' with judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie who both performed at King's coronation concert, live from Windsor Castle on Sunday (May 7). "I watch ‘American Idol'," Stern said. "And those two showed up – King Charles and King Camilla or whatever she is. Camilla the Queen. King Kong, whoever the f***, showed up there. "And they marched out, they’re like two wooden boards, they’re like vampires, they’re stiff. And Katy Perry and Lionel are talking to them. I thought they were cardboard cut outs at first they wheeled [on]." Previously Stern has spoken out against the British royals before, since last year he didn't seem to be a fan of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix documentary, calling them "whiny b***ches.
