Emily Blunt apologises after ’fatphobic’ 2012 interview resurfaces
Actress Emily Blunt has apologised after a video of her making a "fatphobic" comment resurfaced online. The clip, which was from a 2012 interview on The Jonathan Ross Show, shows Blunt telling a story where she refers to a Chili's worker as "enormous" for seemingly no reason. "The girl who was serving me was enormous. I think she got freebie meals at Chili's", Blunt said to TV host Jonathan Ross who responded to her description of the woman by saying: "Nothing wrong with that." In a statement issued to The Independent, Blunt apologised for her comments saying: "I just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12 years ago. I'm appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show. "I've always considered myself someone who wouldn't dream of upsetting anyone so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognisable to me or anything I stand for. And yet it happened, and I said it and I'm so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better." Many called out Blunt's comments on social media when the video first resurfaced. Others called the comment "unnecessary" and said Blunt appeared to "be a not very nice person". Some said they felt sad for the waitress who was likely excited to meet Blunt, only to see her being shamed for her body on TV by the actress. Tom Cruise's message for the King and the MTV awards were virtually identical
Tom Cruise was up in the skies for his coronation concert cameo, which looked awfully similar to his MTV Movie & TV award acceptance speech. While airborne and flying his Top Gun Warbird plane, the 60-year-old 'Top Gun' actor invited King Charles III to be his "wingman," in his pre-recorded video message for the new monarch. “Pilot to pilot. Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time," Cruise said before he saluted and flew off. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter His message to King Charles was part of a number of star-studded video messages for the Coronation Concert, who included: Joan Collins, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, Bear Grylls and Welsh singer Tom Jones. It looked remarkably similar to a video acceptance speech Cruise gave from the cockpit for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, where the actor sported the same cream-blue shirt, aviator sunglasses, green headphones and a headset. Though in this message there was the addition of a golden popcorn trophy as Cruise took home the best performance in a movie for his role in 'Top Gun: Maverick'. "Hi everyone. Thank you so much for this award. I make these sails for you. I love you. I love entertaining you," he said. "You know how much you enjoy it. How much you appreciate it. There's just no better feeling and I hope you enjoy 'Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One.' Cruise added the film will be released in July and that it's a "wild ride," and signed off by saying "We'll see you at the movies" before tilting off and flying for the clouds. Elsewhere, from Katy Perry getting lost, to Ant and Dec pulling faces, here are some of the funniest memes about King Charles's coronation. Have your say in our news democracy.
