All year, we’ve been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the genre, and the Unbothered team has been asking ourselves the same question. We know how far hip-hop has come and how powerful the medium has been for all of us personally. But we also know that embedded in hip-hop’s roots along with b-boys from the Bronx, block parties, breakdancing, and mind-bending rhymes was misogyny, anti-feminist lyrics, and a culture that largely saw women as props instead of peers (despite women being a big part of rap’s foundation). You can simultaneously love hip-hop music and acknowledge the harm that some of its artists have perpetuated. There’s that famous Ava DuVernay quote that sums it up: “To be a woman who loves hip-hop at times is to be in love with your abuser.”

The 23-year-old rapper from the Bronx has so far had quite the year, with two singles Bikini Bottom" as well as her collaboration with Nicki Minaj on 'Princess Diana', both of which appeared on her debut EP Like..?. She also featured on PinkPantheress song 'Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2' and Taylor Swift's song 'Karma', along with collaborating with Nicki Minaj once more for the Barbie movie with the song 'Barbie World' which samples the 1997 song 'Barbie Girl' by Aqua. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter But with her career going from strength to strength, Ice Spice is encountering online trolls, with one recently posting a photo showing half of the rapper's face next to the face of a young woman with Down's syndrome, appearing to suggest Ice Spice has the genetic disorder. The tweet managed to get the attention of Ice Spice herself who sided with the Down's syndrome community with her response. In a quote tweet, she said: "U thought u ate but my sis cute asf," with a heart-eye emoji at the end. Ice Spice's response has people praising her attitude towards the troll. One person said: "Gotta give it to her she definitely blocks out EVERYTHING negative." "I respect her for this," another person wrote. Someone else added: "Ice Spice really may be the most unbothered celebrity. "She's literally our generation Princess Diana, I luv that for us," a fourth person commented. A small but remarkable group of couples have defied the odds and found true success in their journeys of love

Girls Aloud singer Cheryl’s six-year-old pointed out some “weird” details about the band’s old concerts as the group announced a reunion tour. The girl group first rose to fame after the five individual contestants were put together in a band that won the ITV talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. Now, Cheryl Tweedy, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh have announced a 2024 UK and Ireland tour that will celebrate the life of bandmate Sarah Harding, who died from breast cancer in 2021. Speaking to BBC News about the announcement, the band members revealed that their former concerts have raised a few talking points among their young children. Cheryl revealed that her six-year-old son, Bear, who she shares with former One Direction star Liam Payne, said she looked “weird” in old concert DVD footage. “He says to me, ‘You look different, you sound different, this is weird. Why the nakedness? What's with your voice?’” Cheryl said. But, Cheryl wasn’t the only bandmate whose child had something to say about their mother and their early noughties fame. Speaking about her daughter Anaíya, Nadine Coyle explained: “She's never really liked any of the Girls Aloud stuff because I don't smile enough, so I don't look like myself to her.” Kimberley, who has three children, deduced: “They don’t think you should have existed before they were alive, that’s all it is. “Mine are starting to get interested. People are saying stuff about Girls Aloud and they want to know what the fuss is about. “But it’ll be weird for them. They’ll be coming to see us do something so different to normal.
