Earth has received its first ever 'alien message'
Earth has received the first ever ‘alien message’ after a simulation of what extraterrestrial contact could look like was sent out by scientists. The SETI Institute produced the simulation of a radio wave from a Mars orbiter and gave hint of how alien contact would be received. The exercise was conducted to prepare experts for the “profoundly transformational experience for all humankind”. The signal was successfully decoded after taking just 16 minutes to travel through space and be picked up by telescopes on Earth. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It all took place as part of the A Sign in Space project led by Daniela dePaulis, who said during the live-streamed event: “It was very real. This is not the first time we have received a signal from TGO [ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter], but this one is a real message.” The signal had to be decoded, as it couldn’t be heard on Earth without being altered. Victoria Catlett is the GBO software engineer and she explained: “A radio signal is not inherently sound, but a light wave. “When we receive it with something like a car radio, that light wave gets translated into the up and down movement in the speaker - and that is what you hear.” Of course, there’s no evidence that aliens exist at this point, but it’s good to know that we’re prepared. It comes after it was revealed that aliens could be mapping out the planet via the signals mobiles are emitting. It’s all to do with the radio transmission towers which are key to millions of people communicating around the world. These towers are constantly pumping out microwave signals as we call and message one another, and they’re found across a huge area of the Earth’s surface. Have your say in our news democracy. Iggy Azalea and Cardi B top OnlyFans' list of top creators as jaw-dropping earnings released
Iggy Azalea and Cardi B have reportedly become two of OnlyFans' top-earning creators on the platform. The subscription site has transformed many ordinary peoples' lifestyles over the years, with many switching their regular 9-5 for their lucrative side hustle full time. Celebrities have caught wind of OnlyFans' success, and have too, jumped on the bandwagon. For most, it's seemingly paying off with Cardi B raking in $45 million since joining the platform. However, rapper Iggy Azalea took the top spot by making an alleged $48 million in less than a year. The 'Fancy' singer joined OnlyFans back in January. There were later reports that she had made hundreds of thousands of dollars in just 24 hours, which she called numbers "outta thin air". "Lol, Y'all just be saying s*** to say s*** at this point cause that number was pulled outta thin air," she wrote at the time. In another tweet, Azalea also noted that she wouldn't reveal how much money she makes on Only Fans, similar to how she didn't share what made after selling her "music catalog." "Amounts being reported don't come from a valid source. Thanks to everyone supporting me," she added. She also went on to share her most common OnlyFans request during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s talk show Watch What Happens Live. In February, she candidly told the host: "'They'll be like, 'Goddess Iggy. Please, please, please, please. I know that you don't have time for my tiny little thing, but please can you just tell me what you think about it?'" "And then I'll be like, 'Ugh! That's disgusting! Is that even a f**king d**k? You call that a f**king d**k? That's not a d**k. Why are you wasting my time with this? "Send me fifty dollars right now and don't you f**king message me again unless you give me fifty dollars next time'." Rage Against the Machine shared an anti-Nazi quote and right-wingers still got upset
You would think that a band named Rage Against the Machine would be pretty radical in terms of their politics, and you would be right, but that hasn’t stopped right-wingers complaining about a tweet from guitarist Tom Morello taking aim at Nazis. This is a controversial take for some conservatives, apparently. On Thursday, Morello tweeted a graphic which reads: “German saying: If nine people sit down at a table with one Nazi without protest, there are 10 Nazis at the table.” Pretty uncontroversial. As Uproxx notes, it’s not too far removed from the oft-cited quote from the late human rights activist Desmond Tutu: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” And yet, conservatives on Twitter – many of whom have paid the social media platform for a coveted blue tick – aren’t happy with the idea behind this thought experiment, with many getting angry over “communists” for some reason: They’re even kicking off under Morello’s tweet in the form of Community Notes – Twitter’s tool used to provide context to a post if it’s inaccurate. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter One anonymous user wrote “there’s little evidence that this is actually a German saying”, before linking to a tweet citing the phrase from an actual German person named Jens Foell. Oops. And to be clear about whether or not it is actually a German saying, one Reddit thread from 2018 saw users discuss its validity, with all but one claiming they haven’t come across it. However prominent the saying may be in Germany, we’d like to think many can get behind the sentiment no matter where it came from, but looking at the tweets above, we’d be wrong… Have your say in our news democracy.
