Joe Lycett trolls Suella Braverman after Rwanda deal deemed to be 'unlawful'
Joe Lycett trolls Suella Braverman after Rwanda deal deemed to be 'unlawful'
Joe Lycett is back at trolling the Conservative party again, this time Suella Braverman, after the Court of Appeal ruled that the government's Rwanda asylum plan is "unlawful". Lord Burnett, the outgoing Lord Chief Justice, said: "The High Court's decision that Rwanda is a safe third country is reversed. Unless and until the deficiencies in its asylum processes are corrected, removal of asylum seekers to Rwanda will be unlawful." A major setback in prime minister Rishi Sunak's 'stop the boats' policy. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In light of the announcement comedian Joe Lycett tweeted: "ignore the haters babe (by haters I mean the royal court of justice)" Lycett has been known to troll many Conservative MPs, after former prime minister Boris Johnson was found guilty for lying to parliament earlier this month, Lycett tweeted "@Boris Johnson still my king." Similarly, when Liz Truss announced her resignation in October last year, the comedian tweeted: "@trussliz omg just heard there's a leadership election next week????? u shud run bab youd be perfect!!!" Lycett gained a lot of attention last year for his appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg after sarcastically claiming to be "very right-wing". "The haters will say that we've had 12 years of the Tories and that we're sort of at the dregs of what they've got available," the comedian said last year. "I wouldn't say that because I'm incredibly right-wing, but some people might say that." Many fans once again loved Lycett's comedic input to the current situation, with his tweet having thousands of likes. "Tweet of the day," commented one user. Others took inspiration from Lycett's sarcastic remarks and left some of their own: A government source said it was likely to challenge the ruling at Britain's Supreme Court. Did Richard Simmons wear a headband? History confuses fans of famous fitness instructor
Nostalgic internet users have been left divided over whether fitness icon Richard Simmons wore a headband back in his heyday. Sometimes, the way we remember things from our younger days which turn out to be completely different from how they actually were, and people are finding that their memory of Simmons always wearing a headband is totally wrong. Simmons was well-known for his aerobics videos back in the 80s and was often styled in legwarmers, short shorts and vest tops. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter But, debate has erupted online about whether he wore a headband or not, after image searches of the fitness guru consistently show him without one despite people's differing memory. Did Simmons wear a headband? The debate was recently sparked by TikToker Kelly Manno who posted a now-viral video responding to a fan who said: “What until she finds out Richard Simmons never wore a headband.” Initially, Manno suggested the statement was ridiculous before revealing that every picture she found of Simmons showed him without one. She joked: “What do they think they did? Went through the whole internet and scrubbed every photo of Richard Simmons ever wearing a headband?” @kellymanno They’re trying to make #GenX look like we are crazy. And its gonna work!!! #genx #boomer #millennial #mandellaeffect #richardsimmons #headband #conspiracytherory #80skid #90skid On TikTok, one baffled user commented: “He definitely had a headband! The wrist bands and all!” Another said: “HE WORE A HEADBAND!! I’m positive!!!” But, it would appear that Google Images does not return a single image with Simmons himself sporting a headband. On Reddit, someone referred to the phenomenon as a case of the Mandela effect – this describes when a large part of the population people believes that an event happened when it didn’t. They wrote: “I'm 100 per cent sure Richard Simons wore a headband. You cannot find even ONE picture of him wearing one on Google Images. This one is the most powerful Mandela effects I've ever experienced.” Have your say in our news democracy. Even Dua Lipa has something to say about Suella Braverman and the government’s immigration rhetoric
Even Dua Lipa has something to say about Suella Braverman and the government’s immigration rhetoric
Singer Dua Lipa is known for pop hits such as 'Levitating' and 'IDGAF', but it turns out the English-Albanian musician does ‘GAF’ about the UK government’s rhetoric around immigrants – including around Albanians. Speaking to The Sunday Times, the 27-year-old, whose parents are Kosovo Albanians, said “of course it hurt” when Home Secretary Suella Braverman spoke of an “invasion” of immigrants and “Albanian criminals” in the Commons back in November. The artist said: “All those words thrown around about immigrants? I always felt London was an amalgamation of cultures. It is integral to the city. “So when you hear the government talk about Albanians, for example, it hurts. It’s short-sighted and small-minded, but it’s the way a lot of people think. “No matter how we try and change the rhetoric, there will always be those who think, ‘immigrants are coming into the country and taking jobs!’ “However, immigrants who have come here have earned their keep by working incredibly hard. There needs to be empathy, because people don’t leave their country unless they have to out of necessity, out of fear for their family.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Last year, Braverman told MPs: “[2022] has seen a surge in the number of Albanian arrivals – many of them, I am afraid to say, abusing our modern slavery laws. “Albania is not a war-torn country, and it is very difficult to see how claims for asylum really can be legitimate claims for asylum. I would also note that we see a large number of Albanian migrants arriving here and claiming to be victims of modern slavery. “Again, I really am circumspect about those claims, because Albania is, of course, a signatory to the European convention against trafficking - the original convention that underlies our modern slavery laws - and if those people are genuinely victims of modern slavery, they should be claiming that protection in Albania.” At the time when Braverman made the remarks, the prime minister of Albania, Edi Rama, slammed the comments for “fuelling xenophobia”. While Lipa said she likes “being vocal about politics all over the world”, she added she would “stay away from politicians”. Nevertheless, the 'Physical' singer has been praised online for her intervention: And it’s not the first time Braverman has been called out for her choice of language around immigrants, as at the start of the year she was confronted on her use of terms such as “invasion” by a child survivor of the Holocaust. After the woman – 83-year-old Joan Salter – asked Braverman why she feels the need “to use that kind of language”, the home secretary replied to say she “won’t apologise for the language that I’ve used” to “demonstrate the scale of the problem” around immigration. “We mustn’t shy away from saying there’s a problem. I will not shy away from saying we have a problem with people exploiting our generosity, breaking our laws and undermining our system,” she said. Have your say in our news democracy.
