MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Jonathan Majors is still in trouble following his arrest in late March. In a worst-case scenario, the charges against him have been 'upgraded'. Majors appeared via Zoom on Tuesday, May 9, for a planned court hearing. After his felony charge was raised to third-degree assault, Majors could end up spending a year in prison. His lawyer has accused the district attorney of "fixing the case" to comply with the accuser's "new lies."
Majors was charged with the assault and strangulation of his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari in March in New York City. He was also accused of felony harassment and violence. But according to his attorney, the charge has since been "adjusted." A superseding complaint with a third-degree assault accusation was announced at the court hearing on May 9, as per a Deadline report.

'Glaring double standard' and 'racial bias'
Majors was charged with third-degree assault at the hearing, and if convicted, he might face a maximum penalty of one year in jail or three years of probation. On June 13, 2023, the star is scheduled to go to court, where he will be required to make an in-person appearance.
Priya Chaudhry, Majors' attorney, has updated her statement to address the hearing. The "irrefutable evidence" that was previously delivered to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, per Chaudhry, would completely exonerate Majors. She also criticized the district attorney for pursuing the case despite the available evidence, calling it a "witch hunt" and the product of "racial bias" against Majors.
According to Chaudhry's statement, obtained by Daily Mail, "This false case continues [despite] the woman's claimed location shifts, and her story morphs. This is a witch hunt against Jonathan Majors, driven by baseless claims. Instead of dismissing the allegations in the face of the woman's clear lies, the DA has adjusted the charges to match the woman's new lies."
She added that when Majors went to a white cop after reportedly being assaulted by the woman, the officer "taunted" him and denied his injuries. Chaudhry referred to the situation as a "glaring double standard" and claimed that it serves as a prime example of how "racial bias permeates the justice system." Chaudhry said: "This glaring double standard between the treatment of Jonathan Majors, a Black man weighing 200 lbs, and his accuser, highlights the racial bias that permeates the criminal justice system."
Grace Jabbari granted temporary restraining order
The order of protection was authorized by the defense attorney, per a statement made to several media sites on April 27 by the press secretary for the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. This comes after Grace Jabbari, Majors' ex-girlfriend, alleged that the actor had abused her, per MEAWW. A full temporary order of protection is in effect until the next court date and forbids any direct or indirect communication between the parties.
'Let's pull out that race card!'
Social media users took to Twitter to convey their points of view and most of them pointed towards the "race card." One of the Twitter users wrote, "Oh here we go, a lawyer can't prove the man is innocent so let's pull out that race card! Here some advice tell your client keep his hands to himself." A second Internet user commented, "Race doesn’t change whether or not a person is guilty. Provide proof he is innocent, don’t pull the racist card and assume that can get you out of trouble." A third one exclaimed, "I don’t care what his race is, if he’s guilty he’s guilty."
Someone else blamed the system and wrote, "I know it's his attorneys, of course they'll say whatever to back him up cause that's their job but...pulling the race card? The system is rigged I get that. It's super biased...but the evidence is substantial. Hope all this ain't true but if it is... justice must be served." Another chimed in, "When the lawyer has to play the race card you know they don't have anything to defend him." One more Twitter user snarked, "It’s cause of racism that my hand magically striked a women in the face you gotta believe me!"
