Simon Pegg opens up on Tom Cruise's 'genuinely dangerous' stunts in 'Mission Impossible': 'We all have that sense of fear'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One' actor Simon Pegg admits that he and his fellow actors are concerned for Tom Cruise when he performs his stunts and wonder if he will survive. Cruise will reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in the upcoming 'Mission: Impossible' installment and pull off a number of complex stunts. On Monday, June 19, Pegg stated on the red carpet of 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One' in Rome that Cruise is a concern for the cast and crew every time he performs one of the risky stunts that have come to define his entire career.

Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is back in action in the eagerly awaited movie 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One', which will now be released after much anticipation. Paramount president, Brian Robbins, announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that the movie's original release date of July 14, 2023, will now be July 12. 'Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One' is directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie.

'One day, something might go wrong'

Speaking with Deadline at the Rome premiere of 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One,' Pegg highlights how seriously risky Cruise's stunts are and how he and the other actors fear losing Cruise while filming. However, Pegg reiterates that Cruise has always come out unscathed. Speaking on the red carpet at the opulent Italian premiere, British actor Pegg said that he considers himself "lucky" because his character frequently "stays behind the computer."

Pegg said: "I’m lucky because Benji just kind of stays behind the computer and he does his thing. Tom is jumping off cliffs on a motorbike he’s hanging his you know, hanging off trains — it’s genuinely dangerous stuff. There’s always a sense that, you know, one day, something might go wrong we might lose Tom, you know. Anytime there’s a big stunt, we all have that sense of, you know, fear, but he always pulls it off."

Tom Cruise's deadly stunts in 'MI 7'

Cruise consistently goes above and beyond to captivate and amuse, which includes performing most of his own stunts. Cruise will reprise his role as Ethan Hunt and pull off an array of complex stunts. One of these is a motorbike jump down a cliff while wearing a parachute, which has received a lot of attention in the movie's marketing, notably in a behind-the-scenes documentary that was shown before IMAX screenings of 'Avatar: The Way of Water'.

He performs the action by riding his motorcycle down a cliff and then jumping down to the mountain's base. In the movie, Cruise does a number of spectacular stunts, including a lengthy vehicle pursuit with Hayley Atwell through the streets of Rome. A recently released featurette revealed that Cruise drove most of the vehicles in the scene, which lent the scene more credibility.

Which stunt 'MI' director John Woo refused to let Tom do?

The trailer dated May 17 showed the 'Top Gun' star swerving off a cliff while riding a motorcycle, then being involved in a knife battle on top of a train. This comes shortly after John Woo, the director of Mission: Impossible, made a statement regarding a stunt he "refused" to allow Cruise to perform. The action that Woo refused Cruise to perform took place in 'Mission: Impossible 2' which featured the Hollywood actor climbing a mountain without any assistance.

Director Woo reportedly admitted to Letterboxd, "I refused," adding, "I was angry and worried." Then he said that, in his opinion, Tom's solo ascent of a cliff while they were filming the sequence, which was "2,000 feet up a cliff," was "the most dangerous and scary moment." To use stunt doubles, Tom allegedly "didn't allow him" and "wanted to do all the action by himself." Woo added by calling it "insane."
