LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The Greta Gerwig-directed film 'Barbie' sparked a pink craze after the vivid trailers revealed everything from the set to the celebrity cast's clothes to, of course, the spectacular Dreamhouse-inspired set glowing in pink. But, it has recently been determined that there is allegedly a global shortage of the color pink due to its excessive use in the film.
Production designer Sarah Greenwood in an interview with Architectural Digest shared that the film utilized so much pink paint that it led to a global paint color scarcity for the Rosco brand. Gerwig hired production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer, the London-based creatives behind such historical settings as Pride & Prejudice and Anna Karenina, to bring the Barbie world to the big screen.
Where did the set design get its inspiration?
The entire set of the film has taken inspiration from Palm Springs and specifically midcentury modernism and designers like Richard Neutra. But under the direction of Greenwood and Spencer, it was also an entirely original idea in and of itself.
'The world ran out of pink'
Gerwig told Architecture Digest that keeping the "kid-ness" was crucial. She said, "I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much," and claimed that as a result, "the world ran out of pink."
Gerwig claimed that the Dreamhouse was built without walls or doors in keeping with the idea of a dollhouse, which is totally open on one side to allow children to play with the dolls. This decision was also an intriguing one for a live-action movie featuring human beings instead of dolls. "We were literally creating the alternate universe of Barbie Land," Gerwig said.
'That's the most Barbie thing I have ever read'
Many people have shared their reaction over the Rosco brand's paint shortage brought on by the film on Twitter. One person wrote, "Imagine being Warner Bros intern trying to order this paint. Having to actually tell these people we know this is going to cause a shortage but we NEED to film a Barbie movie."
