LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The romance genre is often slammed for being cringeworthy, predictable, and barely nuanced. This is largely an assumption not based on facts that has affected how this genre is perceived. While there's no denying that romance has its fair share of cringe, that can be said about all genres. Romance also comes with explorations of complicated relationships, navigating through familial dynamics and emotional turmoil. Looking at it from just one dimension leaves out many other beautiful things it is capable of showing you.
'Sweet Magnolias' is probably the best example of a layered romance show. While it has multiple romantic relationships as its focus, the series heavily relies on delving into friendships, parenthood, adolescence, and the idea of a community co-habiting in a small town like Serenity. The show is based on the series of the same name by Sherryl Woods who is also the writer on the show alongside showrunner Sheryl J Anderson.
