BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: Tyliyah had a skin keloid as a result of getting her ears pierced. She had got it removed five times, but it kept coming back, more rough and bulbous, each time.
In order to stop the keloid tissue from returning, in 'Botched' Season 8, Dr Paul Nassif first excised it from her ear before injecting her ear with a tumor treatment.
Tyliyah received pressure earrings two months after her surgery to prevent the keloid from returning. She now tries to avoid putting it on too tightly because it is still sensitive.
It was quite difficult for her to wear her hair up or keep it short, but thanks to Dr Nassif, she can now do so.
The guest doctor on the episode was Dr John Frederick who desired to revise damage left by Tyliyah's previous surgeries before re-closing it.
He also shaped her ear and debulked it. She believes the end result was a huge success.
Who is Tyliah on 'Botched' Season 8?
Tyliah is from Calhoun Falls, South Carolina, had a recurring 'monster' keloid on one ear.
She had five keloid excisions and one radiation treatment before reaching out to 'Botched' doctors. The keloid was uneven, bloated, and awful and she had to carefully hide it with her hair to avoid shocking people.
Tyliah's condition manifested after she got her ears double-pierced in fifth grade. It resulted in the formation of a keloid on her ear.
Each time she had it removed, it came back bigger and badder. Tyliah got extremely self-conscious as a result.
So, when Tyliah returned to the usual doctor, he informed her he was unsure what they could do to help Tyliah. She gave up since she had no idea where to turn or where to go. She had exhausted all of her options. Furthermore, she was very heartbroken.
Tyliah was always thinking about her keloid. She didn't want to do anything that might cause her hair to move or make it visible to others. Tyliah has worn over 70 to 80 wigs to conceal her keloid. She would sometimes use a little more hairspray to keep it in place.
It had been years since Tyliah had it removed, so she was hopeful Dr Terry Dubrow and Dr Nassif had discovered something new that could actually have a higher chance of the keloid not returning.
What happened to Tyliah on 'Botched' Season 8?
Tyliah provided a brief history of the keloid to the 'Botched' doctors during her consultation. She said that her keloid began in the fifth grade. In one year, she had two piercings. It initially became firm and began to create the keloid.
When Tyliah went to the doctor, he arranged the keloid excision. He administered two to three injections before removing it the first time. It wasn't much, so it came back.
The form has always been larger and more distinct. Tyliah also disclosed that she had the keloid removed five times in total.
Tyliah has seen two different doctors throughout the course of her five operations. Her last keloid excision was in 2010. She never had a pressure earring, but she did receive radiation to solve the problem.
'Botched' doctors noted that the keloid had 'eaten' portions of the cartilage along the rim during Tyliah's checkup.
Dr Nassif intended to remove a portion of the existing keloid while keeping some of it in place. He intended to build an ear out of the keloid and then inject it with 5-fluorouracil every 4–5 days.
Dr Nassif roped in Dr Frederick and Dr Parsa P Salehi for Tyliyah's surgery. As she was getting her keloid downsized, the doctors switched from general anesthesia to local. They always get a medical workup and blood work, but the issue with Tyliyah was that her BMI was a little bit too high, and there were some risks with putting her under general anesthesia.
Dr Nassif began Tyliyah's surgery by creating an incision around the keloid and amputating it, keeping some of the skin and keloid intact to seal and shape the ear once it was debulked. Finally, they injected it with 5-fluorouracil and applied a pressure dressing to the ear in the hopes that it would not grow back.
Dr Frederick redid the whole cast on Tyliyah's ear on her day two check-in to give it extra compression. Previously, the region felt tight following Tyliyah's operation, but not this time. Dr Nassif summoned Tyliyah when the sutures were removed so that he could have some of the 5-fluorouracil. Tyliyah had to return every couple of days for the injection and chronic ear pressure.
