Barbie fans emotional at small detail in new trailer
With the release of another Barbie movie trailer, fans are getting excited - and couldn't help but notice something they believe to be a heartfelt detail to the doll's origins. In the new preview, viewers got to see more of what Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie and Ken get up to when they end up in the real world, far from their home in Barbie Land. But there is a brief moment near the end of the trailer that has everyone talking. It features Barbie sitting on a park bench and sharing a smile with a mystery woman sat next to her. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In this scene, the voiceover said: “Humans only have one ending. Ideas are forever.” Viewers who watched the trailer with subtitles noticed how the quote is attributed to a character named Ruth. So, many believe that the mystery woman is actually meant to represent the inventor of the iconic doll, Ruth Handler who passed away back in 2002. Handler created Barbie back in 1959 and with her husband Elliot Handler. She was the co-founder of Mattel toys which in turn Barbie became one of the most recognisable dolls ever. Fans quickly took to Twitter to share this presumption - although this has not been confirmed and some have noted Rhea Perlman is part of the cast but her role has not be revealed yet although some believe the voiceover did sound like her. Meanwhile, the lineup for the movie soundtrack was also announced with music from Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Charli XCX, and even Ken himself as Ryan Gosling being list. In addition Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have made a new version of AQUA's “Barbie Girl,” which can be briefly heard in the trailer. Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig is set to be release in cinemas on Friday 21 July. Have your say in our news democracy. Hasan Minhaj criticised after revealing most of his stand-up stories are untrue
A New Yorker piece has gained a lot of attention after revealing that American comedian Hasan Minhaj made-up a lot of the stories at the centre of his comedy, and fans are outraged. Minjah, an Asian American and Muslim American, based a lot of his comedy around those experiences, and his Netflix series Patriot Act won an Emmy. Speaking to writer Clare Malone, Minjah told her "every story in my style is built around a seed of truth". In a Patriot Act segment Minhaj tells the disturbing story of a letter sent to him filled with a white powder that spilled onto his young daughter, who was subsequently rushed to hospital. It turned out not to be anthrax, but served as a reminder of the consequences of Minhaj's comedy. But Malone did some digging and found at there is no record of such an incident. Not from the NYPD, local hospitals, or front-desk and mailroom employees at Minaj's former residence. During her conversation with Minhaj, he admitted that "his daughter had never been exposed to a white power, and that she hadn't been hospitalised". He told Malone that he didn't think he was manipulating his audience when she asked, "It's grounded in truth," he said. Another well known story of Minhaj is from his 2017 Netflix special Homecoming King, where he talks of a white girl he had a crush on, kissed, and invited to prom, only to show up the night of the dance to the girl going to prom with another guy. Onstage, Minhaj said that the girl's parents didn't want their daughter to take pictures with a brown boy because they were concerned what relatives may think. "I didn't know that people could be bigoted even as they were smiling at you," Minhaj says during the show. But the woman in the story disputes it, saying that she had turned down Minhaj, then a close friend, days before prom. Minhaj admitted this was correct, but said he had a different understanding go her rejection and there was an "emotional truth" to the story. The woman also shared that she had faced online threats and doxing for years after Minhaj failed to successfully disguise her identity. According to some former Patriot Act employees, members of the research team felt he could be dismissive of the fact-checking process. Malone reported that, "in one instance, Minhaj grew frustrated that fact-checking was stymying the creative flow during a final rewrite, and a pic of female researchers were asked to leave the writers' room." In a written statement, Minhaj insisted that "fact-checking at Patriot Act was extremely rigorous". When fans and viewers of Minhaj's content read Malone's piece, they were shocked and appalled. Some called his ego "terrifying", whilst others said it is "not okay to make up instances of threat over journalism". Russians are flocking to bootleg Barbie screenings amid Hollywood ban in country
Russians are going to see bootleg viewings of the Barbie movie thanks to Hollywood pulling out of Russia. Warner Bros and other big Hollywood names like Disney and Netflix pulled out of the country after Putin invaded Ukraine last year. So, since then, copies of popular films have come into the country through other Russian-speaking markets, such as Kazakhstan, to work around the sanctions. To get around the system, some cinemas sell people tickets for a little-known Russian documentary or short film and then show a different film during the preview, to skirt American copyright laws and Russian laws that require distribution certificates from the Russian Ministry of Culture. But in June, the primary Kazakh-based distributor that had been illegally delivering Hollywood-licensed films to Russian cinemas announced it was pulling out of the business for financial reasons. This is how pirated viewings have started becoming popular. Nikita Zabolotskikh, 17, has spent an estimated Rbs300,000 — or more than $3,000 — bringing Barbie to the big screen in the city of Perm by acquiring a pirated copy, hiring a Russian dubbing company and rolling out an extensive marketing campaign. He told the Financial Times that he and a friend came up with the idea after reading news reports that the Kazakh company was ending its business — just as Barbie was about to hit cinemas worldwide. “The demand was unbelievable. People were losing their mind buying tickets . . . A huge number of people want to see Barbie,” he said. They now plan to show a higher-quality, re-dubbed version of the film at Kinomax, one of Russia’s biggest cinema chains — with plans to expand to 15-20 other Russian cities afterwards. “It’s the best-quality version on the [Russian] market,” he said. “And probably will be for the next two to three months.” Meanwhile, in Russia’s central city of Tyumen the Gorkiy cinema has already shown a pirated version of the film on its rooftop. Organisers noted that the quality might not suit “lovers of 4k resolution and ideal sound”. Some Moscow politicians don't like the liberal western values shown in the film. Maria Butina, a Russian lawmaker convicted in the US for operating as an unregistered foreign agent, has called for a ban on the sale of Barbie dolls and the new Mattel movie, which she labelled as an “advertisement” for the agenda of the US Democratic party. “What do we see [in the film]? Gays. Trans people. Women who have taken over the world. Nothing about the union between men and women, nothing about love,” she said in an appearance on the Russian Duma TV channel. But that is clearly not enough to stop Barbiemania. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
