Country music singer Jason Aldeon is facing an intense wave of backlash after his song, “Try That In A Small Town”, went viral online, prompting many people to accuse him of dog-whistle racism. The song sets footage of Black Lives Matter protests alongside lyrics like: “Try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road / Around here, we take care of our own.” The song continues: “Cuss out a cop, spit in his face / Stomp on the flag and light it up / Yeah, ya think you’re tough.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The BLM protests were a direct reaction to the murder of African-American man George Floyd by a white police officer. The clips in the music video, which also include an attempted convenience store robbery and other apparent crimes, alternate with shots of Aldean and his band performing in the public square of Columbia, Tennessee. To make things worse, the video is shot in front of the Maury County Courthouse, which at times appears to be on fire with images of burning US flags projected onto it. It’s the same building where a mob hanged 18-year-old African-American Henry Choate from the balcony in 1927. Columbia is also the site of an infamous 1946 race riot that nearly resulted in the lynching of future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall. Another lyric goes: “Got a gun that my granddad gave me / They say one day they’re gonna round up / Well that s--- might fly in the city / Good luck.” Country Music Television (CMT) confirmed Tuesday that it had pulled the video from rotation. Social media has been ablaze with the controversy for much of the last week. Democrat state representative for Tenessee, Justin Jones, called the song "heinous", and a "shameful vision of gun extremism and vigilantism". One user said that if Lil Durk, a black American rapper, made a response to Aldean's video called "Try That On The South Side of Chicago", it would likely be denounced as violent. Others shared videos explaining exactly why people are interpreting the song as dog-whistle racism. Aldean has stood by the song, saying: “There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it – and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage – and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music – this one goes too far.” Needless to say, the people defending him are all the ones you might expect. Top Republicans have jumped to Aldean’s aid, including former president Donald Trump and Florida governor Ron DeSantis. “Jason Aldean is a fantastic guy who just came out with a great new song. Support Jason all the way. MAGA!!!” Trump posted on his Truth Social account. The conservative influencer Ben Shapiro posted a video to his YouTube channel titled “Jason Aldean REFUSES To Get Cancelled”, in which he discusses the controversy and takes Aldean’s side. Most recently, Aldean has been filmed at a concert over the weekend defending the song further. He said: “What I am is a proud American.” “I love our country. I want to see it restored to what it once was before all this bulls*** started happening to us.” “I love my country, I love my family, and I will do anything to protect that. Megan Fox has responded to "weirdos" criticising her for sharing a GoFundMe page for her friend and asking her followers to help if they can. On Monday (July 24), the Jennifer's Body actor took to her Instagram Stories to share a screenshot and a link to the GoFundMe page set up by her friend Brittney Boyce. The fundraising goal is $30,000, to raise money for Boyce's father who was recently pancreatic cancer diagnosis and requires treatment. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Boyce described how the goal for the fundraiser is to help her father who is not “covered by insurance” with medical expenses so "he can focus on himself and not the stress on finances.” "My friend’s dad was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. If you guys are able to help, please do," Fox wrote in the post. Though the post didn't go down well with some people who berated Fox for asking her followers to donate when the 37-year-old's net worth is reportedly $8 million. One person said: "Pay the bill from your friend and don't ask your followers." "Girllll… u could pay that whole entire GoFundMe why are you asking for our money…," another person wrote. Someone else added: "Why don’t you donate your own money to your friend’s dad’s medical treatment instead of asking your fans? You’re literally a millionaire and could easily afford it." "Never understood why celebrities share someone's GoFundMe page when I'm sure they could fund it all themselves," a fourth person commented. Now, Fox has since responded to the flak she's received, taking to Instagram Stories once again to set the record straight, and branding those who bashed her as "weirdos," and "psychos." “Hey weirdos. Do any of you have the emotional intelligence to consider that maybe [Boyce] doesn’t want her celebrity clients donating large sums of money to her because it creates a dynamic in her working relationships that makes her uncomfortable?” She continued: “I just obliged her request. Anything she needs from me personally she will ask and [I] will do it privately. One thing you’re not going to accuse me of is being miserly or lacking generosity. "So try again on another day (probably [tomorrow]!) with some different bulls***, you bunch of psychos.” At the time of writing, Boyce's GoFundMe has so far raised $8,126. In light of the record breaking news, Maye Musk, mother of controversial business magnate and owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, congratulated Stewart on overtaking the record Musk set in 2022, at age 74. Sir Keir Starmer is being mocked for his strange pose on the cover of Labour’s annual conference programme. The political party’s annual conference is taking place in Liverpool on 8 - 11 October 2023 and brochures have been released ahead of time to promote the event. Pictures of the programme shared on X/Twitter have got people talking, as they feature a large picture of the Labour leader Starmer on the front cover. Starmer is pictured in a side profile against a grey background, prompting some severe mockery poking fun at his perceived reputation for having “no personality”. Others pointed out that it resembles an album cover for a musician more than a conference programme. One person on X/Twitter mocked: “‘Keir Starmer, former session musician with The Moody Blues, announces his debut solo album, Annual Conference. A melange of soft rock, mellow jazz and blue eyed soul, this has been given 5 stars in Q Magazine’.” Another wrote: “Cult of no personality.” Someone else added: “Keir Starmer: “For the Me, not the You.” “This is objectively hilarious.
