Britney Spears' Everytime acquires new meaning after Justin Timberlake abortion bombshell
Britney Spears' Everytime acquires new meaning after Justin Timberlake abortion bombshell
Britney Spears shot to fame as the quintessential sugar-pop princess but, in 2003, she showed her serious side with the moving hit ‘Everytime’. And now, the track has acquired a whole new meaning in the light of revelations made in her upcoming memoir ‘The Woman in Me’. In the autobiography, Spears, 41, claims that she fell pregnant during her three-year relationship with fellow superstar Justin Timberlake. And while she’d been convinced that she and the NSYNC heartthrob would have children together “one day”, she said he “definitely wasn’t happy” about the news. The singer wrote in an excerpt published by People on Tuesday: “I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.” She went on: “I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby. I don’t know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. “And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.” Spears then revealed that she had an abortion in late 2000 when she was just 18 or 19 years old, and said the procedure was “one of the most agonizing things” she had ever experienced. Inevitably, the deeply personal disclosure soon dominated social media, with fans convinced that ‘Everytime’ was, in fact, a tribute to her lost, unborn child. They swiftly scanned the music video and performances for clues – and the evidence seems pretty convincing. In the end, the ‘Baby One More Time’ star went on to have two sons — Sean Preston, who is now 18, and Jayden James, who is 17 – with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. Meanwhile, Timberlake also has two sons – Silas, 8, and Phineas, 3 – with his wife Jessica Biel. The ‘Cry me a River’ idol had apparently been “concerned” about what Spears was going to write about him in her book, which will be released on 224 October. “It’s eating at him,” one insider told Page Six. Maybe now, to quote ‘Everytime’, it will haunt him, too. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. The most moving tributes to George Alagiah following his death from cancer
The most moving tributes to George Alagiah following his death from cancer
George Alagiah, one of the most beloved BBC broadcasters, has died aged 67. The ‘News At Six’ presenter lost his battle with bowel cancer on 24 July, almost a decade after he was diagnosed with the disease. His agent Mary Greenham shared the tragic news via a statement. It read: “I am so terribly sorry to inform you that George Alagiah died peacefully today, surrounded by his family and loved ones. “George fought until the bitter end but sadly that battle ended earlier today." Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter It continued: “George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being." She added that her thoughts were with his wife, Frances Robathan, and their two sons, as well as their wider family. Greenham's was the first of hundreds of tributes to pour in to the much-admired journalist. Within minutes of the announcement, Twitter was awash with messages of condolence to Alagiah’s loved-ones, and fond memories of his life. Here’s a look at some of the most moving homages to the presenter: The Sri Lanka-born journalist was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, which had spread to his liver and lymph nodes, in April 2014. He endured two rounds of chemotherapy and several operations, including the removal of most of his liver. In October 2015 he announced that his treatment was over and he returned to BBC 'News At Six' on November 10. Alagiah joined the BBC in 1989 and spent many years as one of the corporation’s leading foreign correspondents before moving to presenting. He first began hosting the 6pm news bulletin in early 2003, but stepped up to front it solo four years later following the departure of his co-host, Natasha Kaplinsky. He was previously a prominent foreign correspondent, often as a specialist in Africa with coverage of civil wars in Somalia and Liberia as well as the genocide in Rwanda 20 years ago. Throughout his career he interviewed central political figures, among them former South African president Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and ex-Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe. HARDtalk Nelson Mandela In 1997, George Alagiah spoke to him www.youtube.com Before joining the BBC, Alagiah workied as a print journalist and went on to write a number of books including A Home From Home, which looked at what it means to be British. Throughout his illustrious career, he also presented other shows such as Mixed Britannia, looking at the UK’s mixed-race population. He was made an OBE in the 2008 New Year Honours. His cancer returned in December 2017 and he underwent further treatment before again returning to work. He took another break from studio duties in October 2021 to deal with a further spread of cancer, before returning in April 2022. Appearing in a campaign in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support in 2022, speaking about the impact of his own experience of living with stage four bowel cancer, Alagiah said: “People always ask me how I cope and it’s the hardest question… “The challenge at first was getting my cancer diagnosis straight in my head – despite having so much going for me, a successful career and a loving family, here I was just being told I was dying.” In October last year, Alagiah announced he was taking a break from presenting the BBC’s 'News At Six' following another scan. He said: “A recent scan showed that my cancer has spread further so it’s back to some tough stuff. I’m missing my colleagues. Working in the newsroom has been such an important part of keeping energised and motivated.” Alagiah spoke openly about the experience of living with cancer, joining a videocast for the charity Bowel Cancer UK in 2020 in which he said he sometimes felt he had the “easy part”, living with bowel cancer while his loved ones had to watch. He said: “Those of us living with cancer know that it affects our families almost as much as ourselves. “In some ways I’ve felt through my six-plus years living with cancer that sometimes I have the easy part… My job is just to stay fit and my family has got to watch all of the other things.” Have your say in our news democracy.
