‘Jeopardy! Masters’ winner James Holzhauer agrees with fans, says the show’s writing could be ‘sharper’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: James Holzhauer, the winner of 'Jeopardy! Masters' 2023, has a message for the creators of one of America’s most popular game shows. The 32-time champion recently concluded the Masters' tournament, taking home prize money of $500,000. James is often at odds with the host and the show's most successful contestant ever, Ken Jennings. However, despite all the chatter, James respects the show for what it has given to him and therefore gives candid feedback when needed.

James recently mentioned in an interview that the writing of the show has been off for a while. The sentences are poorly structured, the questions are vague and the contestants bear the brunt of it due to misinterpretations. He simply echoed the voice of many fans who have been vocal about the show’s declining quality of questions.

‘Writing could be a little sharper’

James recently gave an interview to TV Insider where he spoke about the game show's writing quality. He said, “There has been a lot of turnover backstage, I will say. The whole production team has turned over, so you kind of see some of the things were lost when they changed hands there. I think it’s still a great show, but it could use a little tweaking here and there. Some of the question writing could be a little sharper than it has been.”

His comments only came after a string of ‘Jeopardy!’ episodes filled with triple stumpers and poorly worded questions. The quality of questions has surely gone downhill and the fans have started to question whether they should watch the show or skip it altogether, especially considering the backlash one of the hosts, Mayim Bialik, has been receiving lately.

Poor questions spoil the winning streak

Ben Goldstein was about to land a five-day winning streak but his path to victory was riddled with inscrutable questions and categories. ‘Jeopardy!’ host Mayim Bialik, read the clue under the category “Alliteration” — "In 2022, getting a chance to see Taylor Swift in concert was the definition of this challenging phrase.” Ben stared and simply said, “I have no idea,” forcing Mayim to reveal the correct response as, “How about a ‘Tough Ticket.’”

The response didn’t make sense to the fans watching, who questioned the writers of the show. Bialik also presented movie mashups in an episode but it barely seemed to make sense to the audiences in the studio and the viewers.
